    Jay Capasso

Extension: Regional Specialized Agent, Water Resources

Jay Capasso leads extension and research efforts in nutrient management and irrigation. His extension work involves educating stakeholders and UF/IFAS County faculty on agricultural best management practices. Additionally, he contributes to the Florida Agricultural Soil Moisture Sensor Network, facilitating technology transfer to farmers regarding soil moisture sensor monitoring. Currently, his research focuses on investigating controlled release fertilizer, starter fertilizer, cover cropping, and phosphorus bioavailability. He collaborates on a multi-year sod-based cropping system (bahiagrass-bahiagrass-peanut-cotton; bahiagrass-bahiagrass-corn-peanut) with or without cattle grazing, examining groundwater quality, nutrient cycling, and nitrate leaching using drain gauge lysimeters and deep core (up to 20 feet) soil sampling.

Jay is part of a five-member statewide team of regional Specialized Extension agents dedicated to water resources. His role is unique due to its exclusive focus on agricultural water resource management. Previously, he served as the UF/IFAS Columbia County row crop extension agent and is a current PhD candidate in the University of Florida Soil, Water, and Ecosystem Sciences department.
